Context

St Martins Youth Arts Centre is a contemporary theatre and drama organisation with a forty year history of cultivating creativity, storytelling and performance with young people. To mark their fortieth anniversary, the team wanted a digital refresh that honoured their legacy while signalling the future. They needed a website that could hold the depth of their work, communicate the breadth of their programs and act as an expressive stage for a special anniversary project titled forty forty. This required a site that balanced artfulness with clarity, inviting exploration from patrons, students, parents and the broader creative community.

The Shift

The existing website did not match the emotional richness or creative voice of the organisation. St Martins needed to rethink how their work was presented. The forty forty celebration was at the heart of this shift. Forty stories from forty years, told by alumni, directors, guides and some of Australia’s most respected creatives who grew through the St Martins community. The digital platform needed to feel alive. It needed to host these stories with intention and accessibility while supporting the day to day functional needs of a school, theatre company and arts hub.

The challenge was to create something expressive without sacrificing usability. The site had to inspire patrons and funders, build trust with parents and students and communicate the legitimacy, excellence and imagination behind the organisation.

Our Approach

Discovery Led by Story and Purpose

We began with an in depth discovery process led by Cameron, where we unpacked the creative, strategic and emotional ingredients that shaped the St Martins identity. This process clarified what needed to remain, what could evolve and what stories needed space to breathe.

Balancing Energy with Restraint

The design direction became a blend of bold theatre energy and considered restraint. Typography, colour and motion were used to reflect the vibrancy of the organisation while keeping the interface structured and welcoming.

A Living Archive for Forty Forty

For the forty forty project, we created a dedicated landing experience that acted as both archive and celebration. The layout was kept clean and intuitive so users could move through stories fluidly. Each story was treated as a small performance in itself. The page needed to feel alive, lightweight, easy to manage internally and fast across devices. The build focused on performance, responsive behaviour and a content system that allowed St Martins to curate stories independently.

An Artistic Platform with Practical Depth

The broader site was shaped as both portfolio and information hub. It needed to support program listings, performance history, enrolment pathways and community engagement while still feeling like an artistic expression of the organisation’s voice.
